The Ballad of Lefty and Crabbe at the Jeffs!
5 years ago I got together with my writing partners and started working on “The Ballad of Lefty and Crabbe.” Today, Underscore Theatre Company’s production of The Ballad of Lefty and Crabbe has been nominated for 7 categories in Chicago’s non-equity Jeff awards!
The categories include:
Production — Musical
Ensemble
Director — Musical
Performer in a Principal Role — Musical (both of our leads — Shea Pender and Kyle Ryan)
Performer in a Supporting Role — Musical (Brian Huther, that’s me)
Choreography (Jenna Schoppe)
Is there a “best” anything in the arts? Absolutely not, and I think it’s dangerous to pretend there is— for the health and well-being of artists and the way audiences are invited to experience their work. But I’m thrilled at the opportunity to recognize the incredible work of my friends and the artists in this town.
Let’s celebrate the hard work, vulnerability and joy of theatre artists, whether nominated for an award thingy or not, and let’s continue to be honest with ourselves wrestle with the meaning and purpose of whatever a Jeff is! Now go outside and enjoy the sunshine and don’t get sick!
